Prophet for Profit: Edgar Cayce False Prophet of Yesteryear Bearing Rotten Fruit Today

The 80's were an awesome time, that is if you wanted occult indoctrination through just about every media possible. I mentioned this in my testimony, stuff like "ghostbusters" "ninja turtles" etc serving as a way to misdirect us youth who endured it.

Along with that junk, i recall a number of shows that dealt with paranormal things. This is when the parnormal started to become normal. Some of the shows were new, but i recall there were also alot of repeats from the 60's and 70's. One such rerun was about Edgar Cayce, the so-called "sleeping prophet." I don't recall much of the program, but the seed was planted. What i do recall was that he was that he was allegedly a Christian, and that he was able to go into a trance to predict the future.

Somehow, as i was doubting my faith in Christ and looking to UFO's and other religions as containing truth, i recalled Cayce. I thought since he was a Christian and had powers, then i could do it too. So i looked into him a bit, but was quite wishy washy on what i believed. The worst part was that I started to believe his stuff on reincarnation, especially since that was parallel with some of the UFO stuff i was reading.

It was weird, on one hand, i believed in Christ and didnt fully reject that, but i started to add bits and pieces to that, yet i didnt want to get too much into the occult either. I was luke-warm in my Christian walk, and even more laccadaisical in my occult leanings.

So Edgar Cayce was but a link in the chain hooking towing me towards hell. I recall he claimed to be Christian, people now claim he was and there is even a "pastor" or two contributing content to his website. So apparently people want to sell him and his stuff as Christian.

But it's not, his teachings are of the devil.

So how can i say this? While i don't know what was in his heart, or his relationship with Christ, i can look at his fruit, and his teachings and get a fair idea.

Laying the groundwork to establish Cayce as a false teacher, who does he say Jesus Christ is? 1 John 4:1 - 3

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,

and every spirit that does not confess that [fn] Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the [spirit] of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world."

This is nothing new here. So based on this alone we can tell what Cayce is up to. It appears that Cayce taught that Jesus Christ was merely a reincarnation of Adam, and a number of other folks from the Bible. I hesitate to post the link, but ask God to protect you in Christ's name and look. Here's the quote:

According to the Cayce material, Jesus and Adam were different incarnations of the same
Christ soul. Cayce taught that Eve and the Virgin Mary (Jesus' twin soul) were also different incarnations of the same soul. This alleged karmic connection between Adam and Jesus explains why Jesus was able to
pay the "karmic debt" by atoning for the "sin of Adam."

This Adam-Jesus connection can be seen in the following excerpt from the
Cayce readings:
Question:  "When did the knowledge come to Jesus that he was to be the Savior of the world?"

Cayce:  "When he fell in Eden." [2067-7]

(Beware, heresy available at the following link)

http://www.near-death.com/experiences/origen049.html

Quite a slippery bit, huh? It doesn't deny (nor explicitly state) that Jesus Christ came in the flesh, BUT it does sell short His divine nature. Not to mention that it says Christ was a reincarnated being, and that He had sinned as Adam.

Christ came once, and He had no sin, so right there Cayce's views of Jesus are way off.

That is another clue to exposing false teachers, false teachers deny Christ's divinity. Often times they refer to Him as a "Christ conciousness" or an avatar/reincarnation. All of which sells short the truth about Him. It's crystal clear that Jesus Christ is God manifesting in a human body having been born a human through the Virgin Mary. Here's what Christ said about His own divine nature:

John 10:30 -38

""The Father and I are one."
Once again the people picked up stones to kill him.

Jesus said, "At my Father's direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?"
They replied, "We're stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God."

Jesus replied, "It is written in your own Scriptures [fn] that God said to certain leaders of the people, 'I say, you are gods!' [fn]

And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God's message were called 'gods,'
why do you call it blasphemy when I say, 'I am the Son of God'? After all, the Father set me apart and sent me into the world.

Don't believe me unless I carry out my Father's work.

But if I do his work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don't believe me. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father.""

It should be clear that Jesus is fully man and fully God. How else can He and the father be one? How else could He pay the large debt for the sins of those who believe? Only the Infinite, All powerful God can be enough to cover the debt.

Still, one may argue that when Cayce wasnt submitting himself to demon posession through his trances, that he still was a faithful Christian. Thats what i believed. I had read that he still attended church and taught sunday school. Though i may have been skeptical about his trances at first, this information led me to think that maybe Cayce was ok after all. And if he as a Christian could meditate and see the future, or other things, why couldn't I?

But was Cayce really a Christian to start with? His Wiki entry says so (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Cayce) as does this site (http://sleepingprophet.org/edgarcayce_christian.html). the second link indicates that he was a devout Christian, attended church and even taught sunday school. (Teaching sunday school means little, i was teaching 12 graders only because no one else would, and my relationship with God was close to it's worst at that point.) This link states that he did teach, attend church and even read the Bible regularly. Http://www.edgarcayce.org/are/edgarcayce.aspx

Sounds pretty Christian, huh?

But what kind of Christian was Cayce?

I haven't extensively researched this link, but it seems to jibe with other details about his life such as the connections to Hopkinsville, etc. So, this link (http://genforum.genealogy.com/cayce/messages/101.html) states that he attended Liberty Christian Church, presumably in Hopkinsville Kentucky. The link has more interesting stuff we'll get to later. Here's the website for the church, i believe: http://www.libertychristianchurch.us/.

Ok, so what?

This "denomination" is a Disciples of Christ church. Cayce's wiki corroborates that Cayce was indeed a "disciple of Christ" denomination, and this church fits the bill. Disciples of Christ sounds really appealing, in a way all Christians are disciples of Christ. At least we're supposed to be. But these are THE disciples of Christ, as in their own sect.

But who are they?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disciples_of_Christ

Looks good, EXCEPT the part that says:

"For modern Disciples the one essential is the acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and obedience to him in baptism.[41] There is no requirement to give assent to any other statement of belief or creed. Nor is there any "official" interpretation of the Bible.[42] Hierarchical doctrine was traditionally rejected by Disciples as human-made and divisive, and subsequently, freedom of belief and scriptural interpretation allows many Disciples to question or even deny beliefs common in doctrinal churches such as the Incarnation, the Trinity, and the Atonement. Beyond the essential commitment to follow Jesus there is a tremendous freedom of belief and interpretation."

Though they have to affirm that Christ is Lord and Savior, they can deny the INCARNATION (that's Jesus becoming a human being in my understanding. Recall the 1 John 4 about testing the spirits) and they also deny the Trinity.

I may be taking this out of context, i admit i don't fully understand this passage, but if one denies the Trinity, that means they deny God's Holy Spirit.

Matthew 12:31 - 32

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the [world] to come.

And regarding the Father, perhaps also out of context. My take is that since the Disciples of Christ allow for a denial of the Trinity, they also deny the Father. I feel thay denying the Father applies here. God has manifested for us 3 times, as the Father, as the Son Jesus Christ, and as the Holy Spirit. This is how God has revealed Himself. Denying any of the 3 is perilous.

1 John 2:22 - 24

Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [(but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also].

Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

I also have some beef with their stance on doctrine, that is they don't really adhere to a standard on doctrine. I find it odd that they can accept Christ yet freely discard the rest of God. I may have alimited understanding here, but that's what i've seen so far. Am i saying there can't be true Christians there? No, but one must be careful about adhering to strict doctrine.

Still, is it any wonder that Cayce became what he did?

At any rate, Cayce's denomination had some questionable beliefs, and Cayce himself denied that Christ was who Christ Himself and the Bible declared Him to be. It's clear from his own words that Cayce couldn't have been a Christian, or at best he was a misguided one.

But where did he get his information? Did God give him special messages?

No one will dispute that he tapped into "the Hall of Records" also known as the Akashic Records. Some refer to it as the Book of Life. (http://www.intuitive-connections.net/2002/book-akashic.htm) (danger false teaching there)

"To get to the Hall of Records, Cayce would put himself into the trance state he used for readings."

"An old man would come to greet him and direct him to the information about the person for whom he was giving the reading."

Who is this old man?

The book of life is what sold me into Cayce's teachings, because i know God does keep a book of life (Revelation 21:27). I thought Cayce had found a way to peek at God's book of Life and so started wondering if I could do it. i also started to consider his views on reincarnation as a result.

But as Russ Dizdar so expertly points out. What are these "records?" Who maintains them? Who is the old man who spoke to Cayce and gave him information?

Russ Dizdar has some excellent resources on the hall of records, and i can't really add to what he says. I think there are some podcasts here:

http://www.shatterthedarkness.net/newsupdate/page127.html (bottom of page)

http://www.shatterthedarkness.net/discernment/

http://preemptionbroadcast.podomatic.com/player/web/2010-08-25T12_01_48-07_00

The only thing i can say about the records is they are not 100% accurate, which should be a dead giveaway they are not of God. Who else does that leave to man the records?

But how is it that Cayce, a supposedly Christian man figured out how to do these new age things?

The story goes that he discovered his "gifts" in childhood. Many paranomal experiences begin then it seems, quite possibly from spritual doorways or rites (and rights) that the parents have knowingly or unknowingly given Satan.

Cayce had doorways open to Satan, and so of sourse, Satan came in through them. First, the connection to the questionable Disciples of Christ denomination. Second, his relatives, had connections to Freemasonry.

"A Masonic lodge (Forest Lodge No. 308) met in an upper room of one of the general stores. with several of Cayce's relatives in attendance and at one point Cayce's father running the store below."

http://genforum.genealogy.com/cayce/messages/101.html

His father ran the store beneath the Masonic lodge, in all likelihood he had demonic attachment from them and Edgar got it too. It's evident the father had something going on as the link above states that Edgar's father was an abusive alchoholic.

Another open door would be his early embrace of panthesim, though he didn't seem to see it as such. The link above also states:

"Cayce felt an early, profound connection with nature as well as the supernatural. Both sets of his memoirs devote much attention to descriptions of the fields and woods of his childhood, and it is surely no accident that Cayce describes his opening up to nature and the supernatural almost in the same breath. For Cayce, the natural world held deep spiritual significance:

It appeared to me even then, if God had made the little birds, the trees, the flowers, the beautiful sky, and set the stars in their places ... He must be in every one of those little creatures in some manner or form."

As if this wasn't enough, the link goes on to highlight other links to the paranormal. They don't give timeframes, but this should give you a clue that something spiritual, yet not of God was going on in that area. The famous Bell Witch (which i haven't studied) case was said to have occurred near Cayce's turf. There was also possibly a manifestation of what LA Marzulli would call the Kundalini Spirit. And lets not forget that in the 50's, the famous hopkinsville goblins case.

More supernatural stuff from the same link as earlier:

"Within the Protestant fold Logan County, Kentucky (two counties away from Christian County) was the scene of great revivals in which the Holy Spirit frequently possessed participants to say and do all sorts of improbable things. ranging from barking like dogs to rolling around on the ground in convulsions."

Again, no one tested the spirits, but remember this is confusing and odd behavior, and God is not the author of confusion.

So, a case can be made that Edgar Cayce was not a Christian so much as an occultist who clung to a form of godliness. It's clear from his early childhood thoughts that he embraced pantheism, and later in life actively engaged in what's now called New Age Medtitation to obtain his information. On top of this, it seems that the are in which he came from, there were, and maybe still are (at least into the 50's) unclean spirits manifesting around Hopkinsville.

In researching Cayce, the only "Christian" thing he did was attend church (with no solid doctrine) and read the Bible. Heck, i used to know a druid that read the Bible, and even Freemasons read it too.

I think a case can be made to establish reasonable doubt on Edgar Cayce's alleged Christianity. additionally as one sees his teachings we can see that he demeans Christ, and a number of his predictions never occurred or were in error.

Jesus said in Matther 7:15-23:

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither [can] a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

If you're a Christian following Cayce's teaching, now is the time to repent. If you're not a follower of Jesus, now's the time to turn from false prophets like Cayce and turn to Jesus Christ, the living Son of God. Ask Him to forgive you for your sins, and accept Him as Lord and Savior in your life. Then go read the Gospel of John.

God loves you, but He can only accept you if turn from your sins and you accept His method of dealing with the sin in your life, and that solution is Jesus Christ.

  1. Yes, to be wary of people like Edgar Casey, their teachings, and their true source is wise.

However, we must be even more aware of the darkness being spread in our friendly, neighborhood church. Just look at the many we admire with little qualms as our spiritual fathers ... Calvin, one who caused the deaths of many people (review his life), Martin Luther who wrote such anit-Semitic material he came to be called the prophet of Hitler, even Peter was severely cursed by Paul in Galatians for his legalistic teachings.

The fact is, 2,000 years after the death of Christ, who can we point to in fulfilling the profound promises of Jesus in John 14: "12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."

These are clear promises, as easily understood as John 3:16, but we not only do not seeing anyone living this elevated life as new creations in Christ, we must twist His Words to make it somehow fit our still empty condition.

Jesus warned us ALL, to beware "If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!"

Indeed, our darkness has been and is great, even those among us (Christians) considered to be the most enlightened. We are no.

Cayce was a sincere, simple believer. He strayed from the light into darkness, as have we all. As his life went on, his darkness, as that as so many, compounded itself, growing ever more evident. The subtle darkness of the conventional, acceptable church is far more dangerous than what was exposed through Cayce himself.

Father, help us all to understand our individual and collective darkness, so that we have some chance of moving into the true Light.

    1. Thanks Bob (let me know if I should repost your comment without your email address)

I agree that we must be wary even in church. My own foray into the presbyterian church produced a weak and dependent faith, though partially my own fault for going often just to socialize. Rarely did I hear the gospel preached, or anything remotely supernatural.

We all as the Church and individuals need to undergo the examination in Jesus' letters at the opening of Revelation. There's a lot going on in churches that ought not to be like in Ezekiel 8. Tai chi, qigong, or yoga anyone? Right next to the fellowship hall after Sunday school.

  2. You forgot the best reason to think that Cayce was from Satan was that if he was the great heeler why did his baby boy die after child birth. That would have been a good one to use against him.
When the WORD comes back into the world you and the people that believe what you say will ignore that part of God that acts in the world(WORD) and probley have him put to death....you are without understanding.
keep reading. Try understanding what you read without bias.

  3. There is an interesting information on the "Disciples of
Christ" church in that, one of its ministers would be later the famous spiritist(he called himself a spiritualist though !)pastor Arthur Ford(1896-1971).

Who gained notoriety in 1967 for making contact live on TV with the alleged spirit of dead-by-suicide Episcopal Bishop J.A. Pike's son !

Bishop Pike(1913-1969)was a cleric with very advanced ideas that went the wide gate of non-Biblical freethinking.

Pastor Ford also claimed in his book "Unknown But Known"
to have conducted seances for a certain Sun Myung Moon (1920-2012)...whose name and worldly career leave nothing to want !

Given Edgar Cayce's and Arthur Ford's age frames (1877-1945 and 1896-1971) it's not at all impossible that they met and shared ideas.

Certainly the 4 men now have all eternity to compare notes.

  4. Your evaluation of Cayce is correct. It does not matter whether a person claims to be a Christian or not, if they in one form or another deny the deity and humanity of Christ (fully God/fully man/not mixed together but separate) they are false prophets. Those whom today in the name of Christ claim every human who dies is going to be with Jesus in heaven are denying Christ's atonement and the judgment to come.

I commend you and praise my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ he has bestowed his grace on you to see the deceptive teachings of Cayce and others whom propagate them. May God richly bless you as you seek Him and His Truth...
